Some Christians believe in a very serious sin. They call it a mortal sin. This sin is a very big choice. It can pull a person away from God.

To be a mortal sin, three things must happen. First, the act must be very serious. Second, the person must know it is wrong. Third, they must choose to do it anyway.

Examples might include stealing a lot of things. It could also be missing a special church service. These are seen as very grave matters.

There are also smaller sins called venial sins. These do not pull a person all the way away from God. They just make the bond weaker.

A person can be forgiven if they are truly sorry. They often do this through a special talk with a priest. This helps them find peace again.
