In Christian theology, people talk about different kinds of sins. One very serious type is called a mortal sin. Some people also call it a deadly or grave sin. This belief is found in both Catholicism and Lutheranism. A mortal sin is seen as a major problem for a person's soul. It can lead to a complete separation from God's saving grace. This is a very different outcome than what happens with smaller sins.

For an act to be a mortal sin, three specific conditions must be met. First, the act must be a grave matter. This means the thing done is very serious in nature. Second, the person must have full knowledge of what they are doing. They must understand that the action is a grave offense. Third, they must give their full consent to the act. This means they choose to do it on purpose and with a free will. If any of these three parts are missing, it might not be a mortal sin.

History shows that these ideas have been around for a long time. Early Church leaders realized that people could lose their grace after being baptized. In the year AD 385, a man named Pacian of Barcelona wrote about this. He listed murder and contempt of God as examples of mortal sins. Later, in AD 393, St. Jerome also wrote about these concepts. Some thinkers believe the term comes from a verse in the New Testament. Specifically, they point to 1 John 5:16–17, which mentions a sin that leads to death.

There are many examples of what might be considered grave matter. Some examples include stealing a large amount of property. Other examples are getting drunk or missing Mass on a Sunday. The Catechism of the Catholic Church also mentions things like adultery or divorce. Some sins are seen as even more serious, such as sins against the Holy Spirit. Even a person's attitudes and habits can be part of a sin. It is not just about a single action, but also about a person's goals and values.

Even though these sins are very serious, there is a way to find forgiveness. A person can repent of a mortal sin to fix their relationship with God. Many people use the sacrament of Confession for this purpose. In this practice, a person tells a priest their specific offense. This is a primary way to receive absolution, which means being forgiven. The Council of Trent declared this practice a mandatory belief for Catholics. It is also a tradition held in many Lutheran churches.
