Many people in the Christian faith believe in a concept called original sin.

This idea describes a condition of sinfulness that all humans share. Followers believe this state is inherited from the first humans, Adam and Eve. The belief is based on the story of the Fall in the Garden of Eden.

In this story, Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden. This event is said to have caused a loss of righteousness. It also changed the way humans see the image of God.

How this sin works is a subject of much debate. Some thinkers believe it is a natural part of being human. The Apostle Paul wrote that sin and death entered the world through one man.

This means that because Adam sinned, death came to all people. Some people argue that Adam's story represents all of humanity. They say it is not a punishment from God for later generations. Instead, it is a way to explain the human condition. Others believe that individuals are still responsible for their own choices.

The history of this idea grew slowly over many centuries. Early Christian writers did not always have a specific doctrine for it. For example, some early texts suggest children were born without sin.

However, other leaders like Clement of Rome believed sin was universal. The idea became much clearer in the 2nd century. A thinker named Irenaeus of Lyons helped develop these early thoughts. He lived during a time of great debate in the early Church.

A very important figure in this history was Augustine of Hippo.

He lived from 354 to 430 AD. Augustine was the first person to use the phrase "original sin." His writings helped shape how the Church viewed the Fall. Later, the Councils of Carthage and Orange made these ideas official. During the Reformation, leaders like Martin Luther and John Calvin added more detail. They discussed how sin affects a person's ability to do good.

Today, different religious groups hold different views on this topic. The Catholic Church teaches that baptism can erase original sin.

However, they believe the effects of the Fall still remain in people. This means people still face a struggle between good and evil. Some groups believe sin destroys a person's free will entirely. Other traditions say that people still have the power to choose. These different views help explain how people understand morality and faith.
