In the Catholic Church, an indulgence is a way to reduce punishment for sins.

Many people wonder how this works. The Church teaches that sin has two parts. One part is the guilt of the sin. The other part is called temporal punishment. This is a kind of cleaning for the soul. It helps a person become more holy. This cleaning happens either on earth or in a place called purgatory.

To receive an indulgence, a person must perform a specific action. They might say a certain prayer one time or many times. Some people go on a pilgrimage to a special place. They might visit a shrine, a church, or even a cemetery. Doing good works is another way to gain an indulgence. There are two main types of these rewards. A partial indulgence reduces some of the punishment. A plenary indulgence is meant to remove all the temporal punishment.

The history of indulgences includes some very difficult times. In the early church, they were used to help people facing hard trials. By the late Middle Ages, they were used to support charities. This included things like helping to run hospitals. However, some people began to use them to raise money. This became a serious problem of abuse. Because of this, people like Martin Luther spoke out against them. This led to the Protestant Reformation.

The Church eventually made many changes to fix these problems. In 1567, Pope Pius V forbade tying indulgences to money. This meant you could not buy them through almsgiving. Later, the Council of Trent confirmed them as part of the faith. In the 20th century, the Church changed how they were counted. They stopped using terms like "days" or "years." These numbers used to represent time spent in penance. They were often mistaken for time spent in purgatory.

Today, indulgences still play a role in Catholic life.

They are meant to encourage devotion and charity. Pope Paul VI helped revise the rules in 1967. He wanted to focus on a person's love for God. The Church also updated the list of approved prayers. This list is called the Raccolta. Now, the focus is on sincere prayer and good deeds. This helps people grow closer to their faith through works of mercy.
