Contrition is a special kind of sorrow for sins. The word itself means breaking something that has become hardened.

In Christianity, this feeling is a very important concept. It is seen as the first step toward being close to God again. A person who feels this deep regret is called contrite. This process involves wanting God more than the sin itself. It also requires faith that Christ can offer forgiveness.

There are different ways this feeling works in the soul. In the Catholic Church, thinkers describe it as a sorrow of the soul. It is not just thinking about a mistake or feeling a little bad. It is a real pain and a hatred for the sin committed. This feeling leads to a firm plan to not sin again. Many medieval theologians believed this hatred for sin was the main part. They felt that knowing how bad a sin is creates this sorrow. This sorrow then helps a person change their ways.

History shows that many people have written about this idea. The Council of Trent defined what contrition is for the Church. Long ago, early Christian writers spoke about these feelings too. Saint Augustine wrote that a contrite heart helps a person repent. Thomas Aquinas also explained how the word implies a breaking of hardness. He said a person must cast away their liking for sin. This helps them obtain forgiveness through their change of heart.

There are two main types of contrition in Catholic teaching. The first type is called perfect contrition. This happens when a person is sorry because they love God. The second type is called imperfect contrition, or attrition. This happens for other reasons, like fear of hell or guilt.

Perfect contrition can remove the guilt of a mortal sin. This can even happen before a person goes to confession. Attrition is also seen as a gift from God. It helps prepare the soul to receive grace.

Not everyone agrees on how these ideas should work. Some thinkers had different views on imperfect contrition. In 1537, Martin Luther wrote that it was not true repentance. He felt it was like being a hypocrite. He believed that repentance should not be done in small pieces. However, the Catholic Church teaches that even imperfect sorrow is useful. It is meant to be a sincere and internal feeling. This helps people turn toward a new and better life.
