In the Catholic faith, people talk about different kinds of sin. One type is called a venial sin. The word venial means that it is forgivable. These sins are seen as lesser acts. They do not cause a person to lose their friendship with God. Instead, they only injure that friendship. This is different from a mortal sin. A mortal sin can lead to eternal damnation in Hell.

How does a person know if a sin is venial? It all depends on the subject of the act. A sin is venial if the matter is not grave. Grave means the matter is very serious. Even if a person knows it is wrong, it stays venial if it is not grave. If the matter is grave, it might be a mortal sin. This way of looking at things helps people understand their actions.

A famous thinker named St. Thomas Aquinas wrote about this. He wrote in his book called the Summa Theologica. He said venial sin is different from mortal sin. He compared them to perfect and imperfect things. To find the type of sin, people ask three questions. First, was the matter grave? Second, did the person have full knowledge? Third, did they give full consent?

If any of those three answers are no, it is a venial sin. If all three answers are yes, it is a mortal sin. Each venial sin adds to the penance a person must do. Penance is a way to show regret for what was done. People can also use the sacrament of reconciliation. This gives them grace to help overcome sins. Some people believe that unconfessed venial sins lead to Purgatory.

Catholics believe people should not take venial sins lightly. Doing them on purpose can be a problem. The Magisterium says these small sins can weaken a person's will. Each small fall makes it easier to fall again. This can lead a person toward mortal sins. To avoid mortal sins, followers try to overcome venial sins. It is a way to stay on a good path.
