Wudu is a special way of cleaning the body in Islam. It is a type of ritual purification, which means cleaning oneself for a sacred purpose. Many Muslims perform wudu before they do Salah, which is prayer, or before they read the Quran. This practice is part of a larger idea called tahara, or ritual purity.

It is governed by rules called fiqh, which explain how the rituals should work. While wudu is often recommended, it becomes a must for certain acts like prayer or walking around the Kaaba during tawaf.

There are specific steps that a person follows to complete wudu. First, they wash their hands up to the wrists. Then, they rinse their mouth and nose with water. Next, they wash their entire face. After that, they wash their arms, including the elbows. They also wipe their head and their ears with wet hands. Finally, they wash their feet up to the ankles.

It is important to do these steps in a certain order. Most people try not to take long breaks between the different parts of the washing.

Different groups of Muslims may have slightly different ways of doing these steps. For example, Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims follow different rules within their traditions. Sunni Muslims often wash their hands and arms three times. They also make sure to rub the parts they are washing. Shia Muslims might wash their face or arms only once or twice. They also have specific ways to wipe the head and feet.

To do wudu, a person needs the right kind of water. The water must be muṭlaq, which means it is pure and unmixed. This can be water from a tap, a well, or even melted snow. It can also be water from a lake, a pond, or the ocean.

However, some liquids cannot be used for wudu. People should not use dirty water or water that has been touched by an animal. They also cannot use water that has been mixed with things like juice or blood.

Sometimes, a person might not be able to use water at all. If there is no water nearby, they can use something called tayammum. This is often called "dry ablution." Instead of water, they use clean sand or dust to stay pure. This is helpful if someone is sick or if there is a water shortage.

Wudu is also lost if certain things happen, such as deep sleep or using the bathroom. When these things happen, the person simply performs the ritual again to get ready for worship.
