It is often described as a divine and unchanging path. Many people believe it provides a way to live with justice. The word itself comes from an Arabic root meaning a path. Some scholars say it is like a path to a water hole.

This metaphor shows how important water is in a desert. For some, Sharia is the first step on a spiritual journey. It is the lowest level of a path toward God.

Scholars use specific sources to understand these religious rules. The most important source is the Qur'an. They also look at the Sunnah, which includes authentic hadith. These are reports about the Prophet Muhammad.

Another source is ijma, which means consensus among the community. Some use analogical reasoning, known as qiyas, to find answers. Scholars also look at urf, which is local custom. This helps adapt rules to different cultures and needs. They use a mental effort called ijtihad to find these rulings.

History shows how these laws grew over many centuries. Traditional views say the rules came from Muhammad himself. His followers shared his actions as a model for others. By the ninth century, the main sources were firmly set.

Great jurists helped organize these ideas into schools. These include the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools. Some historians have different theories about this early time. They suggest that early Muslim leaders used many different laws. This included the laws of the people they met.

Sharia covers many different parts of a person's life. It is divided into two main branches of law. One branch is Ibadah, which covers religious rituals. The other branch is Muamalat, which covers social dealings.

This includes family law and how people do business. It also covers political and administrative rules. Some actions are seen as mandatory or recommended. Other actions might be seen as neutral or prohibited. It can even guide private things like clothing and ethics.

Today, people have many different views on Sharia. Approaches to these laws vary widely in the 21st century. Some people want to follow a very pure version. They believe the rules should not be modified at all. Others are modernists who want to update the laws. They believe Sharia should match modern ideas like human rights.
