Fiqh is a special way of understanding Islamic law. The word itself comes from Arabic and means "deep understanding" or "full comprehension."

While many people talk about Sharia, which is the divine law, fiqh is the human way of studying it. It is how people research and try to understand what the law means for daily life. Because it is a human effort, fiqh is seen as something that can change or be corrected. It covers many parts of life, like how to perform rituals or how to run a fair economy.

To find answers, scholars follow a specific way of working. They look at the Quran and the sunnah, which are the teachings of the prophet Muhammad. They use a method called ijtihad to figure out rules for new questions. This work is often split into two parts: the roots and the branches. The roots, called usul al-fiqh, are the main principles used to study the law. The branches, called furu' al-fiqh, are the specific rules that grow from those roots.

The history of fiqh goes back to the very beginning of Islam. After the prophet Muhammad passed away, the community needed help deciding on new matters. In the early years, the companions of Muhammad shared what they had learned. Over time, this grew into a very organized system. There was a "golden age" of jurisprudence between the early second and mid-fourth centuries. During this time, the most important schools of thought began to emerge.

Many different groups have shaped these ideas over many centuries. In Sunni Islam, there are four main schools of thought, known as madh'hab. Within Shi'a practice, there are two or three main schools. Famous scholars like Muhammad ibn Idris ash-Shafi'i helped organize these ideas. He wrote a famous book called ar-Risalah to explain the four roots of law. These roots include the Quran, the sunnah, ijma (consensus), and qiyas (analogy).

Learning about fiqh helps us see how people connect their faith to the world. It shows how ancient texts are used to guide modern life. Scholars even used local customs to help new communities feel comfortable with the law. This helped the Islamic state grow and stay organized. Even the most famous early scholars were very humble about their work. They knew they could make mistakes and always put the Quran first. They used their knowledge to speak out whenever they saw injustice.
