The word ahkam is a very important term in Islam. It is the plural form of the word hukm. A hukm can mean many different things. It can mean a rule, a command, or a judgment. It can also mean an order or a decree. In the Quran, the word is used for many ideas. It can mean God's will or even the power of authority.

Islamic law uses these rulings to guide how people live. These rulings are often called the five decisions. The first type is mandatory, which is also called farḍ or wājib. This means a person must do the action. The second type is recommended, or mustahabb. These are good things to do, but they are not required.

The third type is neutral, which is called mubāḥ. These are actions that are just allowed. For example, eating and sleeping are neutral. The fourth type is disliked, or makrūh. People should try to avoid these acts. They are not considered sins or crimes in court. The final type is forbidden, or harām. Doing these things is considered a sin or a crime.

Different people have different ideas about these rules. For example, jurists disagree on the word halāl. They wonder if it covers the first three types or the first four. There are also four parts to a legal ruling. These are the Lawgiver, the subject, the act, and the ruling itself. A scholar named Āmidī lived a long time ago. He died in the year 1234.

Rules can sometimes change during hard times. This is called necessity, or ḍarūra. For instance, Muslims usually fast during the month of Ramadan. However, a sick person may be told to break their fast. This helps them stay healthy. A scholar can also give a specific answer to a question. This answer is called a fatwa. A fatwa is a legal opinion given by a mufti.
