Salah is the formal way Muslims worship through prayer. It is a very important part of the Islamic faith. For Sunni Muslims, it is the second pillar of Islam. For Shiites, it is one of the Ancillaries of the Faith.

Many people believe that prayer helps the soul stay healthy. They think it is like food for the spirit. Some say it is a way to connect with Allah. The word salah itself means prayer in Arabic. Some think the word comes from a root meaning to link things together.

To start the prayer, a person must first perform wudu. This is a special way of washing to become pure. Next, the person makes a niyyah, which is a clear intention to pray. This helps show that the prayer is worship and not just a habit.

The person must face the qibla, which is the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca. In early history, Muslims faced toward Jerusalem first. Later, they changed direction to face Mecca because of a revelation in the Quran. This shows how important following the holy book is to the faith.

Salah is made of units called rak'ah. Each rak'ah has a specific set of movements and words.

A person begins by standing in a position called Qiyam. They then perform the takbir by raising their hands. After this, they recite verses from the Quran, such as Al-Fatiha. The worshipper then bows at the waist in a position called ruku. After straightening up, they kneel for sujud, where the forehead and nose touch the floor. This cycle of movements is repeated to complete the prayer units.

There are different ways to perform these prayers. Most Muslims perform five obligatory prayers every day. However, some people also perform extra prayers called Sunnah or Nafl prayers.

Different schools of thought, or madhahib, may have different rules for the small details. For example, some scholars have different ideas about how to move the fingers during sitting. There are also special prayers for certain times, like the Friday or Eid prayers. These special times often require people to gather together in a group.

Many Muslims prefer to pray in a congregation rather than alone. They believe praying in a group brings more social and spiritual benefits.

In a group, people stand in straight, parallel rows. A leader called an imam guides the congregation through the movements. The imam is chosen because they have great knowledge of the Quran. In most groups, a man leads the prayer. If the group is only women or young children, a woman may lead. This way of praying helps people feel connected to their community and their faith.
