A mosque is a special place where Muslims go to worship.

The word comes from the Arabic term masjid. This means a place of prostration, which is a way of bowing. While many people think of a mosque as a large building, it can be any place used for prayer. This might include a simple outdoor courtyard.

For Muslims, the mosque is a place to show submission to God. It is a central part of their faith and identity.

Inside a mosque, you will often find specific features to help with prayer. There is a special niche in the wall called a mihrab.

This niche shows the qibla, which is the direction of the city of Mecca. All Muslims face this direction when they pray. Many mosques also have a minbar, which is a raised pulpit. A leader stands there to give a sermon called a khutbah. You might also see a place for wudu, which is ritual cleansing.

The history of the mosque began in Arabia during the 7th century.

Some traditions say the first mosque was the sanctuary in Mecca. Others point to the Quba Mosque in Medina, built by Muhammad in 622 CE. Muhammad also built a mosque in Medina that became his home. This building was a simple rectangular enclosure made of unbaked brick. It used palm trunks for columns and palm fronds for the roof. This simple design served as a model for many mosques that came later.

Different parts of the world have created very different styles of mosques.

In China, the Great Mosque of Xi'an looks like a pagoda. This is because it uses traditional Chinese architecture with green roofs. In India, the Mughals built mosques with onion domes and pointed arches. The Jama Masjid in Delhi is one of the largest in that region. In North Africa, the Great Mosque of Kairouan used square minarets. These styles show how Islamic buildings change based on where they are built.

Mosques are much more than just places for prayer. They often act as centers for the whole community.

People use them for marriages, funeral services, and religious schooling. They can also be places to collect money for the poor. Some mosques even serve as shelters for people who are homeless. Throughout history, they have functioned as courts of law and places for debate. This makes the mosque a very important part of daily life for many people.
