A minbar is a special pulpit found inside a mosque.

It is the place where an imam, or prayer leader, stands to deliver a sermon called a khutbah. This seat is a powerful symbol of authority for the person leading the community. The minbar is usually located to the right of the mihrab, which is a niche in the wall that shows the direction of Mecca. Most minbars look like a small tower with a seat at the very top. To reach the seat, a leader climbs a staircase that often starts with a doorway or portal.

How a minbar works depends on its shape and its place in the mosque. The steps usually go up in a straight line toward the seat at the top. In some mosques, there is also an elevated platform for the muezzin, who is the imam's assistant. The muezzin stands there to recite answers to the prayers during the service. While it might look like a church pulpit, it acts more like a lectern for many different types of readings. This allows the leader to be seen and heard by the entire congregation.

The history of the minbar goes back to the very beginning of Islam. The first recorded minbar was used by the prophet Muhammad in Medina around the year 629 CE.

At that time, it was very simple with only two steps and a seat. Later, the Umayyad leader Mu'awiya I added more steps to make it more prominent. By the time of the Abbasid period after 750 CE, having a minbar became standard for Friday mosques. This helped show that the local leader had the right to lead the community.

Many famous minbars have been preserved as beautiful pieces of art. In Tunisia, the Great Mosque of Kairouan holds the oldest surviving minbar in the world.

It was made around 860 CE and uses over 300 pieces of teak wood from India. Another famous example was the Minbar of Saladin in Jerusalem, which was commissioned in 1168-69. In Egypt, Mamluk craftsmen made minbars using beautiful inlay work with bone, ivory, or mother-of-pearl. These makers used complex geometric patterns like multi-pointed stars to decorate the wood.

Minbars show us how different cultures use art and building styles. In the Maghreb region, makers used special tools to create wooden screens and balconies.

In Iran, minbars are often different because they usually do not have a canopy or a dome on top. Some were even made of stone or marble during the Ottoman period. Whether made of wood or stone, these structures connect the people in the mosque to their long history. They turn a simple place of prayer into a space filled with amazing craftsmanship and tradition.
