Most ottomans do not have arms or backs. They can be a low couch for sitting. They can also be a small seat or stool. Some people use them as a footstool.

These pieces help make a living room look nice. They are often sold to match a sofa or an armchair.

There are many ways to use an ottoman. Some are large and soft like a couch. Others are small and used as a table. Many ottomans have a lid on the top. The seat can flip open using hinges. This creates a hollow space inside for storage.

You can use this space to hide linen or magazines. Some footstools even have four legs. People might cover them with carpet or beadwork.

The history of this furniture began long ago. It traces its roots to the Ottoman Empire. This land is known today as Turkey.

In those homes, it was the main way to sit. It started as a low wooden platform. People would pile many cushions on top of it. Some were built to wrap around three walls of a room.

Ottomans moved to Europe in the late 18th century. They were named after the empire where they started. The French used the name "ottomane" in 1729. The first English record is from 1789.

Thomas Jefferson wrote about an "Ottomane of velours d'Utrecht." In the 19th century, the shapes changed. They became round or eight-sided. Some even had a padded column in the middle.

Today, the word ottoman covers two different styles. It can mean a large seat or a small footstool.
