A sofa bed is a clever piece of furniture. It has two different jobs in a home. Most of the time, it works as a couch for sitting.

Under the seating cushions, it hides a metal frame and a thin mattress. You can unfold this part to make a bed for sleeping. This helps people save a lot of space in a room. Many people call it a sleeper-sofa or a pullout sofa. It is a great way to have a bed without needing a big bedroom.

Making a sofa bed involves a few different steps. First, you move the cushions out of the way. Then, you unfold the metal frame that was hiding underneath. Some models are called slide-away beds. These beds slide toward a wall to form a sofa.

In these models, the mattress is hinged. The mattress folds to create the seat and the back support. A telescoping frame helps the bed platform stay below the cushions.

Many inventors worked to make these beds better over time. Leonard C. Bailey filed a patent for a folding bed in 1899. Later, Rudolf Coopersmith filed many patents for sofa bed parts. He even made a patent for a sofa bed in 1925. In 1931, Bernard Castro used $400 of his savings to sell the Castro convertible. His design is very similar to most sofa beds sold today. Another inventor, William Lawrence Murphy, made the Murphy bed. This bed folds into a wall closet to save space.

There are many different sizes and types of mattresses. Most sofa beds use a queen short mattress. Other sizes include twin, full, and king. The average mattress is only 4 inches thick. Some mattresses use springs to feel bouncy. Others use foam to feel soft or firm.

Some use pocket coils. These are springs that sit inside small pockets. This helps the mattress keep its shape for a long time. High-density foam can be made to feel very soft.

Sofa beds are part of a big family of furniture. You might know other space-saving items like bunk beds. Some people even use sleeping chairs. A sleeping chair is a small bed made for just one person. It can also work as a recliner or a chaise longue. These chairs are perfect for small spaces. Whether it is a large sofa or a tiny chair, these beds help people rest anywhere.
