Upholstery is the art of making furniture soft and comfortable. It involves adding padding, springs, and webbing to seats. Finally, a cover made of fabric or leather is added.

This work is done by skilled people called upholsterers. They can work on chairs, beds, and even mattresses. You can also find upholstery in cars, airplanes, and boats. It is a way to make hard surfaces feel much better to use.

To make traditional upholstery, a person builds up layers by hand. They might start with a wooden platform or webbing. Then, they add stuffing like animal hair from horses or cows. They also use materials like straw, hay, or coir.

To keep the stuffing in place, they use stitches or nails. In the past, they used twine stitches from saddlery to hold curled horsehair. Today, many makers use a light foam called polyurethane. This foam is easy to carry and helps the seat bounce back.

This craft has a very long history. In ancient Egypt and Rome, people used padding for comfort. During the Renaissance, upholstery became a true art form. In 17th-century England, people used sawdust or feathers for stuffing.

During the reign of James VI and I, new styles allowed for beautiful shapes. By the Victorian era, mass production made soft furniture available to many people. Steel springs also became a common way to add comfort.

Many places are famous for making furniture. In the United States, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Hickory, North Carolina, are big centers. In England, the town of Long Eaton is well known for this industry.

There are even special companies like Webs Training Ltd that teach apprentices. Some people, called trimmers, used to work on car bodies. Today, high-quality car makers like Aston Martin still employ skilled trimmers. This keeps the tradition of fine detail alive.

Upholstery is also very important for life on the water. Marine upholstery must survive sunlight and dampness.

Makers use special vinyl that resists mold and rubbing. They also use stainless steel staples so the parts do not rust. Some makers even use closed-cell foam that can help things float. Whether it is a chair in your house or a seat on a boat, upholstery makes our world more comfortable.
