A watchmaker is a skilled person who makes or repairs watches.

In the past, these masters built every tiny part of a watch by hand. Today, many watches are made in large factories. Most modern watchmakers focus on repairing these current watches. They often use spare parts made by the specific watch brand. However, some watchmakers must also be able to make new parts. This is necessary when fixing very old watches that lack replacements.

There are different ways that watch repair works today. Many people work in large factory service centers. Some centers use a method similar to an assembly line. In this way, workers are called "opérateurs." These technicians do not need a full watchmaking degree. Instead, they are trained to do just one specific task. One worker might take the movement out of the case. Another person might polish the metal bracelet or the case. A third worker might install the dial and the hands.

Learning to be a watchmaker requires a lot of study. In England, old rules required a seven-year apprenticeship. After that, workers joined a group called a guild. Today, students use schools that follow the WOSTEP curriculum. In Denmark, students go to the Danish School of Watchmaking in Ringsted. This training lasts four years and covers both clocks and watches. In France, students can earn three different diplomas. These courses can take two years or even more time.

Different watch brands have different rules for their workers. Many Swiss brands do not sell parts to independent watchmakers. They do this to keep tight control over their quality. Some famous brands like Rolex and Omega are different. They allow certain independent watchmakers to buy spare parts. To qualify, a watchmaker might need a modern training certificate. They might also need a very clean workshop and modern tools. In the US, members of the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute can qualify.

People often use the idea of a watchmaker to explain other things. The writer William Paley used a watchmaker to talk about God. Later, Richard Dawkins used the term in his book "The Blind Watchmaker." This book discusses how evolution works. You can also find watchmakers in stories and movies. In the show "Heroes," a character named Sylar is a watchmaker. In the movie "12 Angry Men," one of the jurors is a watchmaker. His job helps him look at facts in a very orderly way.
