Mechanics often pick one special area to study. Some people work on small items. These are called lightweight mechanics. They might fix cars, motorcycles, or bicycles. Other people work on huge machines. These are called heavyweight mechanics. They fix things like tractors or large trailers.

There are many different types of mechanics. Aircraft mechanics fix planes and helicopters. They work on engines and landing gear. Marine mechanics fix boats and propellers. Industrial mechanics work inside large factories. They fix pumps and conveyor belts. Heavy equipment mechanics fix bulldozers and cranes. Even bicycle mechanics have a special job.

Automotive mechanics have many ways to help. Some focus on the electrical parts of a car. Others fix brakes or steering systems. Some work on the transmission. A transmission helps the car move. They may also fix the car body. This takes many years of training. Some mechanics are mobile and travel to you.

Most mechanics must pass tests to show they are skilled. This is called being certified. In Canada, the government handles these tests. In the United States, an group called ASE does this. The ASE provides independent tests for skills. A person can take over 57 different tests. These tests prove they know their job well.
