A mechanic is a highly skilled tradesperson. They use various tools to build, maintain, or repair complex machinery. Most of their work focuses on engines. This profession is vital for keeping the modern world moving. Without them, our vehicles and factory machines would not function.

The role of a mechanic has changed over time. In the past, the term applied to any member of the handicraft trades. This included many different types of manual workers. However, by the early 20th century, the definition became more specific. It shifted to describe someone who works specifically with machinery. This change reflects how technology has evolved in our society.

Mechanics are often categorized by the size of the machines they handle. They are divided into two main classes: heavyweight and lightweight. Lightweight mechanics work on smaller items. This category includes automobiles and bicycles. Heavyweight mechanics work on much larger equipment. They might repair tractors, large trailers, or construction machinery.

Many mechanics choose to specialize in a specific field. Automotive mechanics, or auto mechanics, focus on cars, trucks, and motorcycles. They maintain engines, transmissions, brakes, and steering systems. Truck mechanics have a similar but distinct role. They specialize in diesel engines and air brakes for large vehicles. Some mechanics are even mobile. These professionals travel to different locations to perform onsite work.

Other specialized fields exist for different environments. Aircraft mechanics, also called aviation mechanics, maintain planes and helicopters. They work on engines, landing gear, and avionics, which are electrical systems. Marine mechanics focus on watercraft like boats. They repair propellers, steering systems, and engines. Industrial mechanics, or maintenance mechanics, work inside factories. They keep machines like pumps and conveyors running. Heavy equipment mechanics specialize in massive tools like bulldozers and cranes.

Within the automotive field, the work can be even more specific. Some mechanics focus on electrical diagnosis to find problems. Others focus on the mechanical aspects of the vehicle. They might specialize in suspension or automatic transmissions. Some even focus on auto body repairs. This requires many years of dedicated training. Because the work is complex, mechanics must be highly trained.

To prove their skills, most mechanics seek certification. This means a trade association or a government body recognizes their ability. Certification ensures that a mechanic is qualified to do the job safely. In Canada, a governmental body handles this certification process. In the United States, an organization called ASE provides independent testing. The ASE offers over 57 different tests for mechanics to take. These tests verify that a professional has mastered specific mechanical skills.
