Some electricians work on mobile platforms like ships and airplanes. Others focus on data and cable lines. This profession is vital for modern life. It ensures that power flows safely to our homes and industries.

Electricians perform many different types of technical work. Service electricians respond to requests for isolated repairs or upgrades. They use troubleshooting skills to find wiring problems. They also install wiring in existing buildings. Construction electricians focus on much larger projects. They might install the entire electrical system for a new building. They may also upgrade an entire office floor during a remodel.

In the United States, the trade is divided into two main categories. Linepeople work on utility company distribution systems. They handle very high voltages on power lines.

Wiremen work with the lower voltages used inside buildings. Wiremen often choose one of five primary specialties. These include commercial, residential, light industrial, and industrial wiring. They may also specialize in low-voltage Voice-Data-Video, or VDV, wiring. Specialists may also handle control wiring or fire-alarm systems.

Learning this trade involves a structured progression of skill levels. Most start as an apprentice to learn the basics. In the US and Canada, apprentices work while receiving reduced pay. They follow apprenticeship standards for three to six years. They also receive several hundred hours of classroom instruction.

After completing this, they become a journeyperson. A journeyperson is found competent by a licensing body. Finally, a Master Electrician demonstrates superior knowledge. They often work in the trade for seven to ten years. They must pass an exam on the National Electrical Code, or NEC.

Training requirements vary greatly across different countries. In Canada, individuals need 9,000 hours of practical training. They must also attend school for four terms and pass a provincial exam. In Victoria, Australia, apprentices spend three years at trade school. They must pass three exams to earn an A Class license.

In the UK, electricians must reach Level 3 competence. They may then register for a JIB card to work on building sites. These strict rules exist because electricity presents many hazards. Safety equipment, like insulated rubber gloves, must be tested regularly. In Queensland, Australia, best practice requires testing every six months.

There are also unique roles for electricians in the entertainment industry. In stagecraft, electricians hang, focus, and operate stage lighting. The lead person in this role is the Master Electrician. However, theater electricians are not part of the traditional electrical trade. They have different skills and qualifications than building wiremen. In the film and television industry, the head electrician has a different name. They are referred to as a Gaffer.

Electrical contractors are the businesses that organize this work. They employ electricians to design, install, and maintain systems. Contractors generate bids for new jobs and hire tradespeople. They also provide materials to the electricians in a timely manner. They communicate with architects and engineers to complete the project. This coordination ensures that complex electrical systems meet all professional standards.
