Mechanics often pick one special area. Some work on small things. We call these lightweight mechanics. They might fix cars or bikes.

Other mechanics work on big machines. These are heavyweight mechanics. They fix tractors or large cranes. Some mechanics work on planes. These are aircraft mechanics. They fix engines and landing gear. Marine mechanics work on boats. They fix propellers and steering. Some mechanics even work in factories. These are industrial mechanics. They fix pumps and conveyor belts.

Most mechanics must be certified. This means they pass tests to show they are skilled. In the United States, a group called ASE tests them. They can take over 57 different tests. Some mechanics are mobile. This means they travel to help people on site.
