A loupe is a small tool used to see tiny details.

It makes small things look much bigger than they are. Most loupes do not have a long handle like a magnifying glass. Instead, the lens sits inside a small tube or cone. This tube is often opaque, which means it does not let light through the sides. Some loupes have a housing that folds up to protect the lenses.

These tools help people do very precise work with more ease.

There are three main ways a loupe works. A simple loupe uses only one lens. These are often used for low magnification. They can sometimes have optical aberration, which means the image might look a bit blurry. Compound loupes use multiple lenses to help control that blurriness. This allows for much higher magnification. The third type is a prismatic loupe. These use many lenses along with prisms to change how light moves.

Many different jobs require the use of a loupe. Jewelers use a handheld loupe to inspect gemstones. The Gemological Institute of America says 10× magnification is the standard for grading diamond clarity. This helps them find tiny inclusions or blemishes. Watchmakers use them to assemble tiny mechanical parts. They also use loupes to work on watch dials and straps.

Even photographers use them to check film or find dust on a digital sensor.

Doctors and dentists also rely on these tools. Dentists often wear binocular loupes that look like glasses. This keeps their hands free to perform dental procedures. These loupes help them find cavities or see tiny canals during a root canal. Some dental loupes even have lights attached to them.

Surgeons in fields like neurosurgery or cardiac surgery use custom loupes. These are made to fit the surgeon's own eyes and vision perfectly.

Loupes are helpful for many other interesting tasks too. Geologists use them in the field to see small mineral crystals in rocks. People who collect coins, called numismatists, use them to check for wear. They can even use a loupe to see if a coin is a counterfeit.

Collectors of trading cards and antiques use them as well. Even people who work in museums use them to examine old documents and artifacts. It is a simple tool that helps us see the hidden parts of our world.
