Magnification

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Magnification is a way to make something look larger than it really is. It does not change the physical size of an object. Instead, it changes the apparent size that your eyes see. Scientists use a number called optical magnification to measure this change. This number is a ratio between the size of the image and the true size. If the number is less than one, it is called de-magnification. This means the object actually looks smaller.

Different tools use different ways to work. A magnifying glass uses a positive or convex lens. This lens curves outward to help you hold an object closer to your eye. A microscope works in a similar way to a telescope. It uses an objective lens to make a small object look like a much larger image. This allows you to see tiny things from a comfortable distance. A telescope uses a large primary mirror or lens to capture light from far away. It then uses a smaller eyepiece lens to let you see that distant object more closely.

Measuring how much something is magnified can be tricky. For things like telescopes, we often talk about angular magnification. This looks at the angle the object takes up in your field of view. For example, the Moon looks about 0.52 degrees wide from Earth. If you use binoculars with 10x magnification, the Moon looks like it is 5.2 degrees wide.

There are real limits to how much you can zoom in. If you go past a certain point, you see no more detail. This is called empty magnification. For a telescope, the limit depends on the width of its lens. A telescope with a 50 millimeter diameter has a maximum usable magnification of 120x. Microscopes also have limits. An optical microscope can reach about 800x magnification. If you use oil immersion, you can reach a higher resolution of about 1200x.

It is easy to get confused by magnification in books or on screens. Editors often resize pictures to fit a page. This makes the magnification number written on the page incorrect. Digital images on a computer screen also change size based on the screen itself. To stay accurate, scientists use a scale bar. This is a small line of a known length drawn on the picture. If the picture is resized, the bar resizes too. This lets you always calculate the real size correctly.
