A sofa bed is a piece of furniture with two jobs.

It works as a couch for sitting. It also works as a bed for sleeping. A metal frame and a thin mattress hide under the cushions. You can unfold them to make a bed. This helps people save space in a room.

Many people worked to make these beds better. In 1899, Leonard C. Bailey made a folding bed. Later, Rudolf Coopersmith made many parts for sofa beds. In 1931, Bernard Castro made a design. Most sofa beds sold today are like his design.

There are many kinds of mattresses. Some use foam. Some use springs.

Some mattresses use pocket coils. These are springs inside small pockets. They help the bed keep its shape. Some sofa beds are also called slide-away beds. These beds slide to the wall. The mattress folds to make a back for the seat. You can even find small beds made for just one person. We call these sleeping chairs.
