A coffee table is a special kind of furniture. It is a low table made for sitting areas.

You might use it to hold many small items. It can hold drinks like tea or coffee. People also use it for remote controls and magazines. Some tables hold large books with many pictures. These are called coffee table books. You might also see pretty decorative objects on top. Some tables have extra space like drawers or cabinets.

Most coffee tables are made from certain materials. Many are made of wood. Some people now use faux wood too. Other tables use glass and metal. You might find stainless steel or aluminium used in them. These materials help make the table look nice. The table stays low to the ground. This makes it easy to reach while sitting. It is meant to be very convenient for guests.

History tells us these tables appeared in Britain. They came during the late Victorian era.

One designer named E. W. Godwin made a table in 1868. Makers like William Watt and Collinson and Lock made many of them. This table was not low like we see today. It was about twenty-seven inches high. Some people call this one of the first coffee tables. Other writers just call it a "table."

Later tables became much lower to the ground. This change likely came from Japan. In the 1870s and 1880s, the Anglo-Japanese style was popular.

Japanese tea houses use low tables. These are similar to a Japanese table called a chabudai. In 1938, Joseph Aronson defined the coffee table. He said it was a low and wide table. He said it is used before a sofa or couch. He also thought there was no historical precedent.

Coffee tables became very popular in the 1950s. This happened because more people got television sets.

A low table is perfect for a TV room. It is low enough to not block the view. You can watch the screen easily. Even with cups and glasses on top, the view stays clear. This makes the table a great part of a living room. It helps people enjoy their shows and their snacks together.
