A wardrobe is a tall, standing closet used to store clothes.

Some people also call these pieces an armoire or an almirah. The name comes from old French words. The word "warder" meant to guard or keep. The word "robe" meant a garment. People use these closets to keep their clothes neat and safe. They help organize everything from simple shirts to fancy robes. A wardrobe can be a small piece of furniture. An armoire is usually wider than an adult's arm span.

Modern wardrobes have a very specific way they work. They often use triple partitioning to stay organized. This means the inside is split into different sections. There are usually two compartments on the sides with shelves. The middle space often has hanging pegs and drawers. Drawers are a newer addition to these designs. Some wardrobes also have a clothes press in the upper middle area. This is a space located near a person's chest.

Wardrobes have a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the earliest wardrobes were just simple chests. Only very rich people in palaces had separate places for clothes. Later, the word described an entire room filled with lockers. In the 1300s, the word appeared in the English language. During the time of King Edward I, they stored gold. In the early 1600s, Americans made oak hanging cupboards. They sent these heavy items to England as exports.

Different materials were used as styles changed over time. Many early American pieces were made of heavy oak. Later, makers began using American walnut instead. In the 1800s, many wardrobes were made of mahogany. Some were even made with fine foreign woods. These were often decorated with beautiful patterns called inlays.

Designers like Chippendale used carving to make them special. Others like Sheraton used highly polished woods. Some very large wardrobes were measured by a funny rule. People said a good double wardrobe could hold eight small men.

Many cultures created their own special types of cabinets. In Frankfurt, people made a special two-door cupboard.

These were made of spruce wood with walnut or oak. Two people could take them apart without using tools. In the Netherlands, people used a large cupboard called a Kas. These were made of expensive woods like cherry or ebony. Families kept these as precious heirlooms for a long time. They were symbols of pride and wealth in many homes.
