A chest of drawers is a helpful piece of furniture.

People use them to keep their rooms neat and tidy. These cabinets have many drawers stacked on top of each other. They are great for storing clothes like socks or underwear. You can also keep many other small items inside them. Most people keep a chest in a bedroom for easy access. However, you can place them anywhere in a house to hold things.

Most chests have a simple rectangular shape. They are usually made of wood, but other materials work too. Many models have short legs at the bottom corners to stand on the floor. You can find chests with 5, 6, or even 7 drawers. Some have one wide drawer on top or two smaller ones.

To get your things, you simply pull the drawer out from the front. Many people place the back of the chest against a wall. This is because you do not need to reach the back side. The sides are also made to fit snugly against walls or in corners.

In the past, these items looked quite different. In late medieval Europe, people used simple wooden boxes called coffers. These boxes often had a hinged lid on top. Some even had a single drawer added underneath the main part.

Over time, these boxes changed into the cabinets we see today. Carpenters have worked with these designs for a very long time. They are a steady part of a workshop's history.

History gives us many specific examples of these pieces. In England, some oak pieces from the 1600s still exist today. There are also French walnut pieces from that same century.

One special style is the mule chest, which appeared in England in the 1600s. This chest is wider than it is tall or deep. It was very popular in England and colonial America for 100 years. Some experts say early pieces were made even before 1649. These old designs show how furniture has changed over many years.

People use many different names for these cabinets. In North America, many call them a dresser or a bureau.

In Britain, a dresser might have shelves on top for displaying dishes. Some tall chests are called a tallboy. A chifforobe is a special mix of a wardrobe and a chest. In the 1700s, designers like Chippendale used names like commode bureau tables. These different names help us understand how people talk about furniture in different places.
