A bunk bed is a clever way to sleep. It uses one bed frame stacked on top of another. This design lets two or more people sleep in one spot. It saves a lot of floor space. You can find these beds in many places. They are common on ships and in the military. People also use them in hostels and dormitories. You might see them at summer camps or in children's bedrooms.

Most bunk beds are built with four strong poles. These pillars sit at each corner to hold the bed up. A ladder or a flight of stairs helps you reach the top. The upper bed usually has a railing. This rail keeps the sleeper from falling off during the night. Some models even have a privacy curtain for the lower bunk.

There are many different ways to arrange these beds. A standard bunk has two same-sized mattresses. A twin over full bunk has a large bottom mattress. A full over full bunk is also called a wider bed. This type can sleep four people at the same time. You can also find a futon bunk. The bottom part is a Western-style futon couch. It turns into a bed to save space in small rooms.

Some beds use different shapes to fit a room. An L-shape bunk puts the bottom bed at a right angle to the top. This creates a small alcove for a desk or a bookshelf. A loft bed is different because it only has a top bunk. This leaves open space underneath for other things. You can put a desk, drawers, or a chest in that space. Some loft beds are low for younger children.

Safety is a very important part of using these beds. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has rules for them. They recommend the top bunk only for people aged 6 and older. This is because of the height and the ladder. Some loft beds are even more expensive because they have built-in storage. You can even find a triple loft bed. These use three bunks in an L-shape to use vertical space.
