A mast is a tall spar that stands up on a boat.

It sits on the middle line of the ship. These tall poles do more than just hold up sails. They can hold a radio aerial for talking. They also hold navigation lights and signal lamps. A mast can even give a lookout a high place to see.

How a mast works depends on its shape and parts. Most sailing masts are guyed, which means they are held in place by ropes. On square-rigged ships, masts carry horizontal yards. These yards are the beams that the sails hang from. To get the right height, a mast might be made of different sections. These parts are called the lower, top, topgallant, and royal masts.

People have used masts for a very long time. The oldest evidence is a clay disc from Kuwait. This disc dates back to the second half of the sixth millennium BC. It shows a boat with two masts made of reeds. In the West, the Etruscans used masts on ships. One painting from 450 BC shows a merchant vessel with a tilted foremast.

Many different types of masts exist with specific names. The main-mast is usually the tallest one. It sits near the center of the ship. The fore-mast is the one closest to the front. The mizzen-mast is the one at the very back.

On a two-masted ship called a brig, the forward mast is the foremast. On a schooner, the after mast is the mainmast.

Building masts has changed as technology grew. Before the mid-19th century, masts were made of wood. Some were pole masts made from one single tree trunk. Others were made masts built from several pieces of timber. In 1845, the sloop Maria used the first hollow mast. It was built like a barrel with wooden staves and iron hoops. Today, many boats use aluminum masts that look like tubes.
