A trireme was a very fast and agile warship from ancient times.

These vessels were the main warships in the Mediterranean Sea for a long time. They were used by many groups, such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans. The name comes from the three rows of oars used to move the ship. On each side, three men sat in a line to pull the oars. This design helped the ship move quickly through the water.

Building a trireme was a very careful way of working. Builders had to balance many different things at once. They needed the ship to be light so it could go fast. However, it also had to be strong so it would not break. They placed the rowers in three different levels. The lowest row was called the thalamian level. The middle row was the zygian level. The top row was the thranite level.

Some think it came from Greece, while others think it came from Phoenicia. An old writer named Thucydides said the people of Corinth brought them to Greece. He said a man named Ameinocles built four of these ships for the Samians. Other writers, like Clement of Alexandria, believed the Sidonians invented them. Even ancient carvings in Nineveh show ships with two levels of oars.

During the Persian Wars, the Athenian leader Themistocles helped build 200 triremes. He used money from new silver mines at Laurion to pay for them. These ships helped Athens win a big battle at Salamis. A strong fleet allowed Athens to build a maritime empire. This fleet protected trade paths and food shipments from the Black Sea. It even helped support the way their democracy worked.

Keeping a trireme ready for sea was a hard job. If a ship stayed in the water too long, it became waterlogged. This meant the wood soaked up too much water and became heavy. To stop this, sailors pulled the ships onto the beach every night. Because the ships used light wood, 140 men could carry them ashore.

They also used special cables called hypozomata to keep the hull stiff. These cables acted like strong tendons running through the middle of the ship. They helped the ship stay strong during the stress of ramming.
