A frigate is a special type of warship used on the ocean.

Over many years, the job of these ships has changed quite a bit. In the 1600s, the name was used for any fast ship. These ships were built to be quick and easy to steer. Navies used them for scouting or for patrolling the waters.

They were much faster than the huge ships used in big battles. This speed helped them move around more freely.

In the mid-1700s, a new design called the "true frigate" appeared.

This design came from France and was very sleek. It had one main deck for all its cannons. This was called the gun deck. Below that was a second deck called the berth deck. This lower deck was used for the crew to sleep and live.

Because the guns were on a single high deck, they stayed above the water. This meant the ship could still fight even in very rough seas.

Some sailors wanted even more power for their ships. In 1778, the British introduced the heavy frigate.

These ships carried much larger 18-pounder guns. They also used a special weapon called a carronade. A carronade is a short and light cannon. It was very easy to reload quickly. It also needed a smaller crew to work it.

This helped the ship carry much more firepower than before.

History shows many different versions of these vessels. In 1562, Alonso Pérez used vessels called fragatas in a fleet.

Later, the Dutch navy built large ocean-going frigates around the year 1600. These ships were important for protecting merchant ships. In 1782, a designer named F. H. Chapman built super-heavy frigates for Sweden. These were so strong they could join a main battle line. The designs kept changing as people found better ways to build them.

Today, frigates are still very important in modern navies.

They are no longer made of wood and sails. Many are now made of metal and use engines. Some even use nuclear power to move across the sea. They can be small ships or very large ones. They help protect the ocean just like the old ships did. They remain a key part of how countries guard the water.
