A destroyer is a fast and strong warship. These ships are built to move quickly and stay at sea for a long time. Their main job is to protect larger ships in a fleet or a group of boats. They can defend these bigger ships from many different kinds of threats. Because they are so useful, they are now a standard ship used by many countries.

To understand how they work, we must look at how they defend others. In the past, small boats called torpedo boats could attack large ships. Destroyers were created to hunt these small boats down. They use speed and many guns to stay ahead of an attack. Today, many destroyers use guided missiles to fight. These missiles allow the ships to do jobs that used to belong to much larger battleships.

The story of the destroyer began in the late 1800s. It all started with the invention of the self-propelled torpedo in the 1860s. This new weapon made small boats very dangerous to large fleets. In 1876, the first ship to launch these torpedoes was built. Later, people built "catchers" to guard fleets at sea. By the First World War, almost everyone just called these ships "destroyers."

Many different ships helped shape this history. A Spanish ship named Destructor was launched in 1886. It was very fast and used special engines to reach high speeds. In 1893, the British Navy built the HMS Havock. This was one of the first ships to officially use the name destroyer. The United States also joined in by commissioning its first destroyer in 1902.

Destroyers have grown much larger over the years. An American ship from 1943 weighed about 2,200 tons. A newer ship from 1991 can weigh up to 9,600 tons. That is a huge increase in size! Modern ships like the Arleigh Burke class are very powerful. Some even carry more missiles than older, larger cruisers. These ships remain a very important part of the ocean today.
