A gunboat is a special kind of watercraft built for a specific job. Most ships are made for fighting other ships or carrying supplies. However, a gunboat is designed to carry guns to shoot at targets on the shore. This makes them very useful for attacking coastal areas. Because they are small, they can go where big ships cannot.

In the early days, these boats worked in a simple way. Many used sails or oars to move through the water. Some were very small and had no deck covering them. They often carried just one or two heavy cannons in the front. This allowed them to move into shallow places like rivers or lakes. Being small helped them hide or move through tight spots.

History shows that people have used gunboats in many different wars. During the Gunboat War, five small boats helped defeat a large British ship. In the late 1700s, a man named Fredrik Henrik af Chapman designed boats for Sweden. These designs were so good that other countries copied them. In 1849, a ship called Von der Tann became the first propeller-driven gunboat.

As technology changed, gunboats changed too. In the 1800s, steam engines allowed boats to move without wind. Some boats used paddles on the sides to push through water. Later, boats used a screw, which is a propeller, to move. During the American Civil War, some boats even had hulls made of iron.

These changes helped them carry more guns and stay safe.

Gunboats have even been used for more than just fighting. Because they can travel up rivers, they can reach far inland. This ability led to a term called "gunboat diplomacy." This happens when a country uses its small ships to show power. In the 1900s, some boats were painted with camouflage to hide.
