A cruiser is a special type of warship.

These ships are often very large. They are usually the biggest ships in a fleet after aircraft carriers. Cruisers can do many different jobs at once. They can search for enemies or protect other ships in the ocean. They can even defend against planes or attack the shore.

Because they are so versatile, they are very important to a navy.

How a cruiser works has changed over hundreds of years. In the 17th century, a cruiser was defined by its mission. It was a ship sent on a solo trip to scout or protect trade. During the Age of Sail, smaller ships like frigates did these jobs. Later, ships began using steam power instead of just wind.

In the 1880s, engineers started using steel to build them. Steel is stronger than iron but much lighter. This allowed ships to carry heavy guns while still moving very fast.

History shows how these ships grew in size and power. In 1874, the Russian ship *Kremlin* became the first true armored cruiser.

Later, the 1883 Chilean ship *Esmeralda* became the first protected cruiser. It used a sloped armored deck to stay safe without being too heavy. By the early 1900s, some cruisers became so big they were called battlecruisers. These were almost as powerful as the giant battleships of that time. They were built to be fast and carry very large guns.

Rules were even made to limit how big these ships could be. In 1922, the Washington Naval Treaty set limits on cruiser size.

These ships could weigh up to 10,000 tons. They also had to use guns no larger than 8 inches. A later treaty in 1930 divided them into heavy and light cruisers. Heavy cruisers had guns between 6.1 and 8 inches. Light cruisers used guns that were 6.1 inches or smaller.

Today, the way we see cruisers is quite different. Most modern cruisers use guided missiles to fight.

These are missiles that can be steered toward a target. While they look like destroyers, they have much better combat systems. Some modern versions, like the Chinese Type 055, are very large. Other countries like Japan and South Korea also use powerful cruisers. They remain some of the most important ships on the sea.
