An aircraft carrier is a huge warship that acts like a floating airbase.

It allows a navy to use planes far away from any land. This means they do not need to use local airfields for their work. These ships are often the most important part of a fleet. They help a country show its strength across the wide oceans. A carrier is part of the largest weapon system ever made.

These ships work by using a long, flat flight deck. This deck is the space where planes take off and land. Many carriers also have a hangar to store and fix aircraft. There are different ways to help a plane get into the air. Some ships use a CATOBAR system, which uses a catapult to push planes forward.

Other ships use a STOBAR system with a ski-jump ramp. This ramp helps lighter planes jump into the sky. Speed is also vital because it creates wind over the deck. This wind helps the planes lift up more easily.

Aircraft carriers have changed a lot since they first began. In the early 20th century, they were even made of wood. Back then, they only carried small balloons for looking at things.

Later, they became much larger and stronger. Since the Second World War, they have replaced battleships as the main flagship. They changed naval battles from using big guns to using air strikes. Today, many of the largest ships use nuclear power to move.

There are 50 active aircraft carriers in the world today. These ships are operated by fifteen different navies.

The United States has 11 large nuclear-powered carriers. Each of these US ships can carry about 80 fighters. China, the United Kingdom, and India each have two carriers with ski-jumps. France operates one carrier that can hold around 40 fighters. Other countries like Italy and Spain also use smaller carriers.

Carriers are useful for many different jobs at sea. They can be used for fighting or for helping people. For example, they provide aid during disasters or humanitarian missions.

They can also act as a base for helicopters. Because they sail in international waters, they do not need land permission. This allows them to move quickly to any part of the world. They are truly amazing tools for modern navies.
