Long ago, these ships were built for speed. They were used to scout or patrol the sea.

In the 1700s, France made a new design. This was the "true frigate." These ships were long and sleek. They had one main deck for guns. This deck is called a gun deck. Below that was a berth deck. This was a place for the crew to live. Because the guns were high up, the ships could still fight in rough seas.

Some frigates were much larger. These were called heavy frigates. They carried bigger guns to fight harder. Some even used carronades. A carronade is a short, light cannon. It was easy to reload and needed fewer men.

Frigate designs changed over time. Some later ships were made of iron. Today, frigates are still very important. Some use nuclear power to move. They come in many sizes to help keep the oceans safe.
