The Delian League was a large group of Greek city-states.

It was formed in 478 BC to protect Greece. The main goal was to keep fighting the Persian Empire. This was necessary after the Greeks won the Battle of Plataea. The League acted as both a defensive and offensive alliance. This meant they worked together to protect themselves and attack enemies.

Many different states joined this group for safety.

Members of the League had to make important choices. They could choose to send their own soldiers to fight. Most cities chose to pay money instead of sending troops. This money went into a shared treasury to pay for wars.

To show they were loyal, members swore a special oath. They even dropped iron ingots into the sea to show their bond. This helped the group stay organized and ready for battle.

Athens became the leader of the whole League. While Sparta was strong on land, Athens was a power at sea.

The group held its meetings on the island of Delos. This island was home to the Temple of Apollo. Because of these meetings, the group became known as the Delian League. Later, the leaders moved the treasury to Athens in 454 BC. This move was a big symbolic gesture by the leader Pericles.

Between 150 and 330 city-states were part of the League.

Athens used the money from the members for its own needs. They used the funds to build more ships and beautiful buildings. This changed the League into what people call the Athenian Empire. Some members felt they were no longer free to make their own rules. In 465 BC, a city called Thasos even tried to rebel against Athens.

The League was very successful at first in its main mission. It helped push the Persian forces out of the Aegean Sea. This meant Persia was not a huge threat for fifty years. However, the power of Athens caused tension with other groups. This tension helped start the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC. The League finally dissolved in 404 BC when the war ended. Later, Athens tried to start a Second Athenian League to regain power.
