Athenian democracy was a special way of ruling in ancient Greece. It began in the city-state of Athens and the land of Attica. This system focused on ideas like liberty, equality, and security. The word democracy comes from two Greek words. One part means "people" and the other means "power." So, the word literally means "people power."

While Athens is very famous, it was not the only democratic city. By the late 4th century BC, many Greek cities had similar rules. Some historians think half of the 1,000 Greek cities might have been democracies.

In this system, citizens took part in making laws. However, not everyone could participate. Only adult, free male citizens could join in. This group did not include women, slaves, or metics, who were foreigners living in the city. These male citizens likely made up only 30 percent of the total adult population.

They used an Assembly, called the Ecclesia, to meet and decide things. A council of 400 members called the boule also helped run daily affairs. This was very different from a monarchy, where one person has all the power.

Many leaders helped build this system over many years. In 594 BC, a man named Solon made important reforms. He created four classes of people based on how much they produced each year. He also set up the Assembly for all male citizens. Later, Cleisthenes made changes in 508–07 BC. He broke the power of rich families by organizing citizens into ten new groups. These groups were based on where people lived instead of their wealth.

Another leader, Ephialtes, helped in 462 BC by reducing the power of a group called the Areopagus.

Pericles was the longest-lasting democratic leader in Athens.

During his time, the system was strong, but it faced hard times. In 411 and 404 BC, small groups of leaders called oligarchies briefly took control. This happened during the Peloponnesian War. Later, the Macedonian army conquered Athens in 338 BC. This stopped the original democracy for a while. Even when Athens was later ruled by Rome, some old ways stayed. For example, officials called archons were still elected by the people.

Today, many countries use democracy, but it works differently than in Athens. In ancient Athens, people used direct participation to make choices. This sometimes led to hurried decisions or the influence of a mob. Modern democracies use checks and balances to keep things steady. This helps ensure that leaders think carefully before making big changes. We also try to include many different viewpoints. This helps prevent a small group of people from holding all the power.
