This era followed the Greek Dark Ages. It ended when the second Persian invasion of Greece happened. Many people used to think this time was just a lead-up to the famous Classical period. Now, scholars study it for its own great achievements. It was a time of huge changes for the Greek people. They grew in number and changed how they lived.

During this time, the way Greeks lived changed completely. Many small settlements joined together to make one big urban center. This process is called synoecism.

This helped create the polis, or city-state. The polis became the main way people organized their lives. These cities often built big walls for protection. For example, Corinth built city walls by the middle of the 7th century BC. These new cities needed new ways to make rules. The growing population made old systems stop working well.

New ways of thinking and writing also began. The Greeks developed their own alphabet during this period.

They also wrote the earliest surviving Greek literature. Artists started making large stone sculptures and red-figure pottery. In the military, the hoplite became the main type of soldier. Greeks also began to travel very far away. They settled across the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Some built permanent colonies, while others built trading posts called emporia.

These colonies were independent and not ruled by their home cities.

Different cities created very different types of governments. In Athens, a man named Draco wrote early laws in 621 BC. Later, a leader named Solon made big changes in 594 BC. He helped people by stopping slavery for those in debt. He also changed how people earned the right to hold office. Later, Cleisthenes made even more reforms to help start democracy. In Sparta, things were different and very organized. The Spartans built the Peloponnesian League around 550 BC. This was a group of cities that made Sparta a very strong power.

We learn about this time through many different clues. Most of the written history from this era is actually poetry. We also find old laws carved into stone or written on tombs. Because there are not many books from this time, we look at objects. Archeologists find many original pieces of Archaic art. This is special because much of the later Classical art is just copies. We also use stories told by later writers like Herodotus. Even without many books, the Archaic period laid the foundation for everything that came next.
