Athens is famous for creating democracy. This is a system where citizens help rule. A leader named Cleisthenes started these reforms in 508 BC. He replaced old groups with ten new tribes. These tribes helped people vote for local government. The city had a council called the Boule. This group handled the daily work of the city. Most leaders were even picked by lot. This means they were chosen by chance.

Athens grew very strong through wars and wealth. The city used silver from the mines at Laurion. This money helped them build a huge fleet of ships. Leaders like Themistocles helped guide these big changes. Athens fought the Persian Empire in several battles. They won a famous naval battle at Salamis. After these wins, Athens led an alliance called the Delian League. This helped Athens become a very powerful leader in Greece.

Later years brought many difficult changes for Athens. A long conflict called the Peloponnesian War began in 431 BC. Athens fought against a group of states led by Sparta. This war ended in 404 BC with an Athenian defeat. Eventually, a northern kingdom called Macedon became very strong. They defeated Athens at the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC. This meant Athens was no longer an independent power. However, it remained a wealthy place for culture and ideas.
