Athens was also the birthplace of democracy. This is a way for people to rule themselves. A leader named Cleisthenes helped start this system in 508 BC. In the city, people could vote on laws. They even picked many leaders by lot. This means they chose people by chance.

During the Age of Pericles, the city grew very strong.

Pericles was a famous leader. He helped build the Parthenon. This is a grand temple for the goddess Athena. Silver from nearby mines helped pay for these big projects.

Athens fought many wars to stay powerful. They fought the Persian Empire and the city of Sparta. These wars changed how Athens led the Greek world. Later, a kingdom called Macedon became more powerful. Athens stayed a wealthy place for culture, but it was no longer an independent power.
