Long ago, the people of Athens made a giant gift.

They built it for their goddess, Athena. This statue was called Athena Parthenos. It was kept in a special room in the Parthenon. A master named Phidias led a big team of workers. They used cypress wood to make the inside frame.

Then, they covered the wood with gold and ivory. The ivory was used for her face, arms, and feet. Workers used thin layers of ivory to make it fit. They even used red paint on her lips and nails. The gold was very heavy. It weighed about one ton!

The statue stood about 13 meters tall. She wore a helmet and a robe called a peplos. She held a large shield and a spear. A sacred snake sat on the ground near her. The statue was so big it almost touched the ceiling. It was a bright and shining sight for all to see. Sadly, the original statue was lost a long time ago.
