He lived a long time ago in Greece. He was from Lemnos. Later, he lived in Athens. He worked in the second half of the 5th century BC. Alcamenes was known for his skill. His statues had a very fine and delicate finish.

He made many kinds of art. One famous work was a statue of Aphrodite. This was called the Aphrodite of the Gardens. He also made a statue of Hephaestus. Some people say he helped decorate the Parthenon. This was a very important temple. He likely worked there with a leader named Phidias.

It is hard to find his exact work today. Many old books mention his statues. One book says he made a statue of Ares. This was a god of war. Another book says he worked on a temple at Olympia. However, experts find these stories hard to prove. We have found a stone head of Hermes. It is a copy of his work. This helps us learn about his art. Alcamenes was a very original artist in his time.
