He was a sculptor who worked with stone. People in his time admired his skill and talent. He was known for making art with a delicate finish. This means his statues looked very smooth and fine. His work showed a lot of care and detail. He was a very important person in the art world.

Making statues is a hard job that takes much practice. Alcamenes likely worked on the Parthenon in Athens. The Parthenon is a famous temple with many carvings. He probably worked there under a leader named Phidias. He might have been the best sculptor in Athens after Phidias left. This would have required great focus and many years of training. Every piece of stone had to be shaped perfectly.

Alcamenes lived a long time ago in the 5th century BC.

He was originally from a place called Lemnos. Later in his life, he lived and worked in Athens. He was a contemporary of the famous artist Phidias. This means they lived and worked during the same era. Historians study this time to learn about his life. We do not know his exact birth or death dates.

Many famous statues are linked to his name.

In 1903, people found a stone head at Pergamum. This was a copy of a Hermes statue by him. It is called the "Propylaeus" Hermes.

It is hard for experts to be sure about his art today.

Many statues we see now are just copies. It is difficult to connect old writings to real objects. Some stories about his work might not be true. For example, some say he worked at the temple in Olympia. Most experts think this is not possible. Still, Alcamenes remains a very original and progressive artist. He helped shape the style of Greek art forever.
