arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Polykleitos was a famous Greek sculptor from the 5th century BCE. He lived during a time of great art in ancient Greece. Many people call him "The Sicyonian" or say he was from Argos. He worked alongside other great artists like Pheidias and Myron. These men helped create the Classical Greek style of art.

Polykleitos wanted to show the perfect human form. He believed that beauty came from math and balance. This idea was called symmetria, which means parts fitting together well. He wanted his statues to look both strong and calm.

To make his art, Polykleitos used a special set of rules. He wrote a book about these rules called the Canon. This book explained how to use math to find perfect proportions. He looked at how every part of the body related to others. For example, he measured the finger to the palm and the wrist. He also linked the forearm to the upper arm.

Some experts think he used a clever way with squares. He might have used a cord with knots to measure shapes. This helped him create a sense of organic vitality in his work. It made the stone or bronze feel alive.

Polykleitos is most famous for a pose called contrapposto. This is when a person shifts their weight onto one leg. It makes a statue look like it is caught between standing and walking.

One of his most famous works was the Doryphoros. This name means "Spear Bearer." It showed a hero with a very balanced body. He also made the Diadumenos, which shows a youth tying a headband. This boy might have just won an athletic contest. These statues showed the beauty of a strong athlete.

We do not have any of his original bronze statues today. They were lost to history a long time ago. However, we can still see his work through many Roman marble copies.

These copies were made later to honor his style. One copy of his work was even kept by Emperor Titus. Another statue, the Discophoros, is also known from these copies. These pieces help us understand his amazing skill and vision. They show us what his original art must have looked like.

His influence lasted for a very long time after he died. He started a school of followers that lasted three generations. Famous sculptors like Skopas and Lysippus learned from his ideas.

Even his son, Polykleitos the Younger, became a famous artist. His son was a great architect who designed a big theatre. The rules Polykleitos made became a standard for many artists. They used his ideas in Greco-Roman art and later in Europe. His work helped change how people look at the human body.
