Agathodaemon was an alchemist in Egypt. Alchemy is an early way of studying minerals and materials. He lived during the late Roman period. We do not know his exact birth or death dates. Most of his own books are lost to time. We only know his name from fragments in later books. These old writings are called treatises. One famous collection is called the Anepigraphos.

He is famous for describing how to make certain things. He wrote about a way to produce silver. He also described a substance called a "fiery poison." This substance was likely arsenic trioxide. Arsenic trioxide is a type of oxide that is very toxic. It can be very harmful to living things. This substance is known as an amphoteric oxide.

Agathodaemon had a specific way of making this poison. He started by fusing a mineral with natron. Natron is a type of salt found in nature. The mineral was likely realgar or orpiment. These are both types of arsenic ores. When he mixed them, they created a clear liquid in water. He saw how this liquid changed other metals.

One interesting thing he noticed involved copper. He placed a piece of copper into his clear solution. The copper changed into a deep green color. This color change is very important to scientists today. It helps prove he was likely using realgar or orpiment. This is because those minerals would create copper arsenite. This reaction shows how the chemicals worked together.

His work helped build the foundations for later science. His ideas moved from Egypt to the Nestorians. Later, this knowledge passed to the Arabs. The Arabic language gave us the word "alchemy." The Arabs helped the study of alchemy grow very much. This knowledge eventually reached Western nations too. His early steps helped lead to modern chemistry.
