Alum is a special type of chemical compound. It is usually a salt made of aluminum and water.

Most people use the name alum to talk about potassium alum. This specific kind has a formula written as KAl(SO4)2·12H2O. There are other types too, like sodium alum or ammonium alum. These are named after the different single atoms they contain. Some alums even use other metals like chromium instead of aluminum.

These different versions can change the color and properties of the salt.

Many alums work in a very similar way. They are all soluble, which means they dissolve easily in water.

When they dissolve, they often have a sweetish taste. They are also acidic and can turn blue litmus paper red. A cool thing about alum is how it grows. It forms crystals in a shape called an octahedron. This means the crystal has eight sides. In each crystal, metal atoms are surrounded by six water molecules. If you heat them up, the water leaves the salt. This makes the salt swell and turn into a powder.

People have used alum for a very long time. The ancient Greek writer Herodotus wrote about Egyptian alum.

On the island of Lesbos, people made potassium alum from a mineral called alunite. Roman writers like Pliny the Elder also described it. Pliny said alum was used for medicine and for dyeing cloth. In the Middle Ages, alum was a huge business. It was a main export from the Chad region. It traveled to markets in Egypt, Morocco, and Europe. Alchemists often confused alum with iron sulfate during this time.

Scientists worked hard to understand exactly what alum is. In the early 1700s, G. E. Stahl thought it came from limestone. He was wrong, but other scientists soon fixed the mistake. Johann Heinrich Pott and Andreas Sigismund Marggraf showed it was different from chalk. Marggraf found he could make perfect crystals using alumina and sulfuric acid. Later, Torbern Bergman noted that only potassium or ammonium would work to make alum. Finally, Louis Vauquelin discovered the true makeup in 1797. He proved it was a double salt made of potash, alumina, and sulfuric acid.

Today, we use alum in many parts of life. It is used in water treatment to make cloudy liquids clear. This process is called flocculation.

In the bathroom, alum can stop small bleeding nicks from shaving. In the Philippines, people use tawas as a natural deodorant. Jewelers even use a hot alum bath to remove broken steel drill bits. The alum eats the steel but does not hurt gold or silver. It is a very helpful tool in many different jobs.
