Potassium alum is a very important chemical compound. It is also known as potash alum or potassium aluminium sulfate. Its chemical formula is KAl(SO4)2. You can often find it as a dodecahydrate. This means it has twelve water molecules attached to it.

In a neutral solution, it forms crystals in an octahedral shape. An octahedron is a shape with eight sides. If the solution is an alkali, it forms a cubic shape instead. This substance is the most important member of a group called alums.

This compound works in many different ways. It is used to clean water by reducing cloudiness. In the textile industry, it acts as a mordant. A mordant is a substance that helps fix dyes onto fabric. This makes the colors stay bright and fast. It is also used in baking powder, which is labeled as E522. For personal care, it can be a deodorant or an aftershave. It also works as a styptic to stop minor bleeding from shaving.

People have discovered alum throughout history. Ancient Egyptians used it as early as 1500 BCE. They used it to clear up cloudy water. In Mesopotamia, people used it for glass-making and tanning leather. In Greece, people made alum from a mineral called alunite. The Romans also knew about it and called it alumen. In India, it is mentioned in old medical texts like the Charak Samhita. In China, it is known as mingfan.

Making alum was a major part of history in England. In the 16th century, people tried to make it from shale. This helped the Industrial Revolution grow. Workers in Yorkshire had to burn shale for many months. This process used a lot of firewood and changed the landscape. They would steep the shale ash with seaweed and urine. Then they would boil, evaporate, and crystallize it. This work was very hard and could pollute the land with acid.

Scientists spent a long time learning its true recipe. In the 1700s, Georg Ernst Stahl thought it came from limestone. Later, researchers like Johann Pott and Andreas Marggraf proved him wrong. They showed it involved alumina, which is found in clay. In 1797, Louis Vauquelin showed that alum is a double salt. He proved it is made of sulfuric acid, alumina, and potash. This discovery helped us understand how many different minerals work.
