Potassium permanganate is a purplish-black salt that looks like tiny crystals.

When you dissolve these crystals in water, the liquid turns a very bright pink or deep purple. This substance is a strong oxidizing agent. An oxidizing agent is a chemical that causes changes in other materials through a process called oxidation. Because it is so good at causing these changes, it is used in many different ways. It is used in big factories, science labs, and even to treat water. People also use it to help make things like cloth or medicine.

This substance works by changing the structure of other things it touches. In water treatment, it can remove iron or the smell of rotten eggs. It can even turn a pink color to show it is working. When it is used to keep fruit fresh, it works by removing ethylene. Ethylene is a gas that makes fruit like bananas ripen. By taking that gas away, the potassium permanganate helps bananas stay good for up to four weeks. It can even be used to start fires. When mixed with glycerol, it can ignite all by itself.

People have used this salt for a long time. It was first made in the 1600s. By the 1800s, it was common in medicine. During World War I, Canadian soldiers used it in an ointment. It was also used to help clean the stomachs of people who were poisoned. In the year 2000, the world produced about 30,000 tons of it. Even today, it is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. This means it is a very important tool for doctors around the world.

There are many specific facts about how this salt looks and acts. The chemical formula for it is KMnO4. In its solid form, it can look purple, black, or gray. It might even have a blue metallic shine. It is also known by many other names, like "purple salt" or "Condy's crystals." In a lab, scientists use it as a tool called Baeyer's reagent. This helps them find certain types of chemical bonds. If the purple color fades to brown, the scientist knows a reaction has happened.

Even though it is helpful, you must treat it with great care. It is very toxic if someone swallows it. Drinking concentrated solutions can cause breathing problems or swelling. It can also cause chemical burns on your skin or eyes. Because of this, doctors usually recommend using it in a very weak, diluted form. In 2015, experts suggested mixing only 100 mg into a whole liter of water. It can also stain your clothes a dark color.
