Potassium hydroxide

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Potassium hydroxide is a white solid that people often call caustic potash. It is a strong base, which is a type of substance that reacts with acids. This chemical is very important in many different industries around the world. In 2023 alone, about 2.5 million tonnes of it were produced. It is highly corrosive, meaning it can burn skin or eyes very easily.

Because it is so reactive, it is used to make many other chemicals. It is also a key part of making soft and liquid soaps.

This substance works in many ways through chemical reactions. One way is through saponification, which is the way it turns fats into soap. When it touches fats on your skin, it quickly turns them into soap and glycerol. This is why the substance feels greasy when you touch it. It can also act as a desiccant, which is a tool used to dry things out. It does this because it has a high affinity for water. It pulls water toward itself, even from the air.

People have found different ways to make this chemical over time. In the past, makers added potassium carbonate to a strong solution of calcium hydroxide. This was a common method until the late 19th century. Today, most of it is made through a process called electrolysis. This involves using electricity on solutions of potassium chloride. This modern method is similar to how sodium hydroxide is made. It is a very efficient way to produce large amounts for industry.

There are many different levels of purity for this chemical. Some uses, like cleaning metals, only need 90% purity. Food grade versions also need 90% purity, but they must have very little lead or arsenic. Other uses require much higher levels of cleanliness. For example, electronic grade versions used for computer chips need at least 99.9% purity. Even more special versions used in medicine must be higher than 99.99% pure.

You might find potassium hydroxide working in things you use every day. It is used in many types of alkaline batteries to help move power. Some batteries, like those in the Toyota Prius, use a mix of this and sodium hydroxide. It is also used in the food industry to make olives less bitter. It even helps in making cocoa. Scientists use it to study insects or to identify certain types of mushrooms. They watch to see if the mushroom changes color when the liquid is added.
